Hiroko Oshima is a scenographer and researcher dedicated to advancing sustainability in theatre. A graduate of Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, she has designed over 130 productions across a wide range of genres in Japan and internationally. Her works include in leading venues such as the New National Theatre Tokyo, Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, and Tokyo International Forum, as well as numerous community-based projects in public theatres.
From 2010 to 2011, Ms Oshima undertook research on theatre for young audiences in Germany through the Japanese Government’s Upcoming Artists Overseas Study Program. In 2016, she received the Incentive Award from the Japan Association of Theatre Designers & Technicians for her costume design of Ubu Roi.
After completing her Master’s degree in Theatre for Social, Political and Environmental Change at Lancaster University, Ms Oshima founded Image Nation Green in 2023, a non-profit organisation driving green transformation in Japan’s performing arts sector and the official distributor of the Japanese translation of the Theatre Green Book.
She is currently pursuing PhD research at Lancaster University, focusing on the development of sustainable materials for scenography and exploring circular design practices to shape the future of theatre-making.
