Dr. Celina Chin has served as the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) since its incorporation in 2001. Under her leadership, HKCO has evolved into a globally recognised institution, acclaimed for artistic excellence and innovative projects such as instrument reform, music education, and talent development. The orchestra has earned three Guinness World Records, founded the first International Conducting Competition for Chinese Music, and pioneered events like a post-pandemic 5G live concert at sea.
Dr. Chin holds a doctorate in Professional Studies from Middlesex University, an MA in Strategic Management for Non-Distributing Organizations, and diplomas in Corporate Governance and Company Direction. A seasoned arts administrator, she began her career in 1989 with Hong Kong’s former Urban Services Department, working across major festivals and arts organisations. She has extensive expertise in non-profit management, marketing, and cultural governance.
Currently, she chairs the Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association, serves on advisory committees including the HK Academy for Performing Arts, and is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Directors. She also acts as visiting professor and lecturer at multiple music institutes.
Organisation Description
The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) is often invited to perform at famous venues and festivals all over the world, and received numerous highly acclaimed awards such as the “SDG World Record” and the 19th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards – “Award for Arts Promotion and Education” in 2024.The HKCO is set up in four sections: bowed-strings, plucked-strings, wind and percussion. The bowed-string section, in particular, has been using the Eco-Huqin series developed by the Orchestra since 2009. The HKCO performs both traditional Chinese music and contemporary, full-length works in a variety of musical formats and contents. It also explores new frontiers in music through commissioning over 2,400 new works of various types and styles, whether as original compositions or arrangements.
